In an appalling incident, Siraj Sheikh (name changed), a 16-years-old boy from Versova, attempted to rape a 31-month-old girl in his neighborhood.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon in Sheikh's grandmother's house, which is in the same building as that of the accused and the victim.
According to the police, the girl was in pain and narrated the entire incident to her mother. The girl's family then lodged a complaint against Sheikh on Tuesday afternoon.
However, the case was registered only last night after the medical reports confirmed the attempt of rape on the girl.
Ishaq Khan (name changed), the girl's father, said, "What was done to my daughter was inhuman. How can someone even think of doing such a heinous act to a kid? I want the boy to be punished."
He added, "The boy seemed to be very shy and used to come to our house daily. He used to play with my daughter and I never thought that he'd try to rape her."
Meanwhile, the cops are hunt ing for the boy, who is been absconding, and are questioning his parents.
Inspector Tukaram Divte said, "After the medical tests, it was proved that rape was attempted on the girl.
However, as she wasn't raped, we have registered an FIR against the boy for attempt to rape and outraging the modesty of a girl."
